The flight from New York City to Johannesburg, South Africa, takes 15 hours. At that length, it’s basically part of the vacation. So to kick off the trip, I decided to do an hourly journal of my time in the big metal bird.
10:39 AM: Settling into my seat, I discover the complimentary toiletry kit wedged in a seat pocket.
11:40 AM: Checking out the duty-free catalog, safety card, and magazines.
12:40 PM: Lunch!
1:41 PM: Watching movies makes the time fly by (ar ar ar).
2:41 PM: Mourning Heath Ledger all over again.
3:41 PM: My vanity quails at publishing this appalling sketch. But journalistic integrity compels me. (Also, I mislabeled the faces – Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline should be swapped.)
4:41 PM: Last Vegas is a very cute movie.
5:42 PM: I can fall asleep anywhere… except, apparently, in this lovely chair.
6:41 PM: Tossing and turning.
7:41 PM: How do other people manage this?
8:41 PM: Retro-journaling for the past three hours of attempted sleep takes a toll on my hand.
9:41 PM: Ugh I am going to be so jet-lagged
10:41 PM: Giving up on sleep. Movie #3.
11:41 PM: Zac Efron – Apparently Not a Sleep Aid.
12:41 AM EST/6:41 AM ZA: They are trying to make us believe it is morning.
7:41 AM: About to touch down in Johannesburg!
Me during all of this:
