Dispatches from July 8
6 AM: Up and packing a few outfits and a lot of water bottles.
9 AM: On our way to Las Vegas! When I was a kid, my parents always stopped by Goldstein’s Bagels to get us breakfast on the way to Vegas. Although one too many bouts of carsickness has forever removed the appeal of their “peaches and cream” bagel, I still feel like Goldstein’s is the official food of Vegas road trips. I’ve got ripe tomatoes, red onions, capers, smoked salmon, and cream cheese on a chewy everything bagel – perfection.
View from I-15. I love the stark beauty of the desert.
Noon: Nearing the end of our drive. Arthur gets his first taste of the infamous dry heat!
“All the houses look the same. And it is very warm.” – Arthur
3 PM: Visiting with Grandma. It’s been a long time since I got to spend so much time with just her!
6 PM: Dinner at Claim Jumper!
Their very large, flavorful salads have filled us with smiles.
We wander the Strip, taking in the multicolored showgirl plumage, and the actors who must be sweating buckets in their Wookie, Transformer, Batman, and SpongeBob bodysuits. We catch the fountain show and Arthur makes calculations and estimates about the gambling business. We browse the Forum shops at Caesar’s Palace and ignore the escort hawkers and end the night gazing up at the Bellagio’s breathtaking Chihuly ceiling installation as though it was a sky full of stars.
